Having 20 years experience of the UK insurance market, working predominately
in claims fulfilment, we formed Pegasus Direct in 2007, following a burglary at our own home. Our insurers were able to arrange immediate and direct replacement of our stolen electrical goods and golf equipment, but were unable to do the same for our saddles and tack, all of which needed immediate replacing due to
forthcoming competitions.

To agree our claim, we were asked to obtain a written quotation from an equestrian retailer and send it to our insurer, who would consider the claim {with the half promise of a cheque to follow}. The process took almost 3 weeks, as a result of which we missed four competitive events that season. Without our tack we could not compete. Also, without tack and equipment, maintaining our horses fitness and training regime was almost impossible.

Research by the Countryside Alliance suggests that over 4 million people in the UK are known to be involved in some form of equestrian activity every week. Living in a rural area, we regularly hear of homes, livery, training and competition yards being burgled for their equestrian products, specifically tack, saddles and field equipment, due to its high value.

Market research confirmed our suspicion that the market lacks a specialist in the validation and supply of equestrian products. It also revealed insurers' annual spend on equestrian related claims is growing year on year and there is a demand from insurers, loss adjusters and claims administrators for such a specialist. Thus, Pegasus Direct Replacement Ltd was formed.
